MURDER IN THE FOG

The fog hid everything that night. Including who put a knife in the moneylender.

INCIDENT REPORT. Geoffrey Sallow, a moneylender, was found knifed in Pickle Court off the embankment on the worst fog of the winter. The river fog lay so thick that the constable could not see the water from the rail, the gas lamps hung as dim haloes, and no man could make out a face at ten paces. Sallow's pocketbook was gone. His killer came and went unseen in the murk — which is also why any witness who claims to have watched someone clearly across that distance cannot be believed. Five persons give statements for the hours around the murder. One of them sees far too much.
