COLD CASE · PRACTICE
THE UNSENT TELEGRAM
He quoted the dead man's wire. It reached the house an hour after the murder.
INCIDENT REPORT. Edwin Mercer was found at dawn behind the counter, struck once with the heavy brass stamp. A telegram addressed to him had been wired late and did not reach the house until an hour after the surgeon's hour of death; no one in the bank that night could yet have read it. Five of the bank's people were awake in the town. Each gave an account. One of them speaks of the wire's contents before any eye could have seen them.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
