COLD CASE · PRACTICE
THE LOCKED CELLAR
The cellar key lay in the dead man's pocket. One mourner swears he went down for wine.
INCIDENT REPORT. Bernard Stannard was found at dawn at the foot of the cellar stair, his skull struck in with a heavy decanter. The cellar door had been locked all night and the only key lay on the dead steward's chain; no one else could have gone down those steps. Five of the club's people were awake through the night. Each gave an account of the dark. One of them swears to an errand the locked door could never have allowed.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
