THE COLD HEARTH
He swore they sat by the fire till it burned low. The grate held a week of cold ash.
INCIDENT REPORT. Walter Larch was found at dawn in his parlour, struck down with a heavy brass shell-case kept as an ornament. The grate held a week of cold, undisturbed ash; no fire had been lit in that room all night. Five of the household were awake in the cold. Each gave an account. One of them swears to a fireside the dead grate proves was never lit.
