THE STOPPED WATCH
His watch stopped at a quarter past eight. The surgeon set death near half past nine.
INCIDENT REPORT. Bernard Quill was found at dawn at his bench, struck down with a heavy bench-vice. His own watch had stopped at a quarter past eight, yet the surgeon set the true hour of death near half past nine. Five of the shop's people were awake that night. Each gave an account. One of them pins an alibi to the quarter past eight the stopped watch falsely shows.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
