He swore the dead man was at the organ. The bellows had been split for a month.
A parish church late at night, the great organ silent in its loft. The bellows had split a month before and sat unmended; not a note could sound from the cold pipes until the bellows-maker came, whatever any mourner might claim to have heard.

INCIDENT REPORT. Bernard Wren was found at dawn beneath the organ loft, struck down with a heavy brass pipe. The organ bellows had been split for a month and sat unmended; no note could have sounded from the dead pipes that night. Five of the parish people were awake. Each gave an account. One of them swears the organ played when it could make no sound at all.
