THE EARLY DARK
She swore it was still light when she left at seven. That month the dark came by six.
A town house on a deep autumn evening, when the sun was long down by six and the yard lay black by seven. Lamps were lit early and blinds drawn against the dark, for the light failed an hour sooner than a summer eye would expect.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Walter Hart was found at dawn in his hallway, struck down with a heavy walking-cane. That month the sun set before six; by seven the yard was pitch black and every lamp in the house was lit. Five of the household were awake. Each gave an account. One of them swears it was still light at an hour the early dark proves was black.
