THE PADLOCKED YARD

He swore he slipped out to the stable. The yard gate was chained shut for the night.

INCIDENT REPORT. Frank Stagg was found at dawn in the tack room, struck down with a heavy iron stirrup-iron. The yard gate had been chained and padlocked for the night, the watchman holding the only key; no one could have passed into the yard once it was barred. Five of the inn folk were awake. Each gave an account. One of them swears to slipping out through a yard the chain held shut.
