He described just where the knife had lain. The body had hidden it from every other eye.
A private study where a man lay dead behind a shut door, the weapon fallen from sight beneath him. Only the one who struck the blow could know where the knife had come to rest; to every other eye in the house the study was a closed door and a silence.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Edmund Cole was found at dawn in his study, stabbed once and fallen across the rug. The knife lay hidden beneath the body, out of sight of anyone at the door; only the killer could have known where it came to rest. Five of the household were awake. Each gave an account. One of them describes the knife's exact place, a detail the body kept from every other eye.
