INCIDENT REPORT. Edmund Foss, purser of the coastal packet Meridian, was found dead in the Bly family chapel at dawn, among the candle stubs of a vigil no one admits to keeping. One fact stands settled: the night train ran two hours behind from a slip at the junction, the stationmaster's board chalked and witnessed, and the nine o'clock did not leave the coast until eleven. No traveller left town before that hour. Five were asked for their whereabouts. One account will not hold.
