INCIDENT REPORT. Ralph Foss, pawnbroker of Halt Row, was found dead at the foot of the signal box steps in the first light, his shop keys gone from their ring. One fact stands settled: the gas main was breached at ten o'clock, and the works log and the constable's order both stand plain that with the leak abroad no flame of any kind was permitted or lit until the line was made safe past one. For three hours the village had no light to work by. Five were about the halt that night. One account will not hold.
