THE TIDE TABLE

A lighthouse on the point, interwar, killing frost, the turning beam, the long climb.

Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.

INCIDENT REPORT. Walter Calloway, steward of the Wrack Point estate for thirty years, was found dead at the foot of the lighthouse stair on the point, the lamp above him still turning. One fact stands settled: the tide ran over the chapel causeway from nine o'clock, the harbourmaster's table and the wet sand both past argument, and the chapel island could not be reached nor left on foot until the ebb near three. No one crossed after nine. Five were on the point that night. One account will not hold.
