COLD CASE · PRACTICE
THE EARLY DARK
Manor library, late-Victorian, the dead hour before dawn found him; leather, lamp-oil, a ladder to the high shelves.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Percy Thorne, organ master at Harlowe Manor, was heard at the library organ until the seven o'clock bell and found dead among the high shelves by eight, the ladder fallen beside him. One fact stands settled: sunset that week came at twenty minutes to seven by the almanac, and the lamplighter's round book shows every yard lamp lit at seven exactly. From the seven bell onward the manor yard stood in full dark. Five gave accounts of that hour. One account will not hold.
