THE SPLIT BELLOWS

A private chapel, late-Victorian, driving rain, candle-wax and cold stone.

Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.

INCIDENT REPORT. Leo Stannard, dealer in church antiquities, was found dead in the private chapel at Ashfield Court, come down to value the altar plate, the case open and one piece gone. One fact stands settled: the organ bellows had split on Sunday and hung dead, the tuner's report dated and the torn leathers photographed; not a note could be raised from that instrument all week. The chapel stood silent. Five were about the court that evening. One account will not hold.
