COLD CASE · PRACTICE
THE TAPROOM LEDGER
A night packet steamer, interwar, driving rain, the saloon lamps swinging.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Hector Marsh, choirmaster of St. Brannoc's, was found dead in a cabin of the night packet steamer Coralline an hour out of harbour, the rain driving flat across her decks. The boat had called once, at the pier below the Ferry Inn, and every soul who sheltered there through the storm was written into the taproom ledger by the innkeeper Ambrose Fenn, who kept his own fire and his own book all night. Five sailed on her. One account will not hold.
