COLD CASE · PRACTICE
THE WOUND BENEATH THE COAT
Estate glasshouse, late-Victorian, a moonless dark, orchids and cold glass.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Ambrose Pyne, owner of the Calder mills, was found dead among the orchid benches at the far end of the estate glasshouse, fully dressed and lying as though he had fallen. There was no moon that night. One fact stands settled: the wound that killed him lay beneath his coat and was found only at the post-mortem, the surgeon's note plain that nothing showed while he was dressed. No one who saw him could have known where he was struck. Five were about the grounds. One account will not hold.
Small numbers count each symbol's appearances.
