COLD CASE · PRACTICE
THE FROZEN WELLS
A bank's back office, late-Victorian, the hush after the last train, ledgers and a cold grate.
Decode each statement, then name the one liar. The cipher is the same for all five.
INCIDENT REPORT. Ralph Stannard, moneylender of Cross Street, was found dead in the back office of the county bank before opening, his own ledger open at a page of names. The frost that night took the water in the jugs. One fact stands settled: the ink had frozen solid in every well in the house, and the housemaid's morning note records thawing them at the range before breakfast. No pen wrote in those rooms that night. Five had reason to fear the page he was reading. One account will not hold.
