A1Z26 Cipher: Letters to Numbers and Back
Every letter has an address: its place in the alphabet. The A1Z26 cipher is nothing more than that arithmetic, and that is exactly why it is the first code most people ever break.

The A1Z26 cipher turns letters into alphabet positions: A is 1, Z is 26. Learn to decode number messages, crack the no-separator case, and write your own.
THE METHOD
- Number the alphabet. Write out the alphabet with its numbers, 1 to 26, or keep the chart above in view.
- Convert each number. Take each number and look up its letter.
- Watch the word boundaries. Separators inside a group split letters, and larger gaps or slashes usually split words.
The A1Z26 cipher replaces every letter with its position in the alphabet: A is 1, B is 2, Z is 26. It is the simplest substitution cipher there is, closer to arithmetic than to secrecy, and that is precisely why it is the first code most people ever crack.
What is the A1Z26 cipher?
Number the alphabet and you have built the whole system. There is no key to agree on, no chart to memorise, nothing to hide from anyone who has ever counted on their fingers. The name says it all: A equals 1, Z equals 26.
Written out, a message becomes a run of numbers, usually split by dashes, dots, or spaces: 13-5-5-20 reads MEET. Some writers drop the separators to make things harder, and that single choice turns a toy into a genuine puzzle. More on that below, because it is the one place A1Z26 gets interesting.
You will also see it called the letter-to-number cipher, the alphabet number code, or simply the number cipher with A equals 1. Same arithmetic every time.
How do you decode an A1Z26 cipher?
Three steps, none of them hard.
- Write out the alphabet with its numbers, 1 to 26, or keep the chart above in view.
- Take each number and look up its letter.
- Watch the word boundaries: separators inside a group split letters, and larger gaps or slashes usually split words.
Try it: 4-5-1-4 / 12-5-20-20-5-18. The first group gives D, E, A, D. The second spells L, E, T, T, E, R. DEAD LETTER. Ten seconds of counting, and most of that is finding R on the strip.
Speed comes from anchors. You learn that 5 is E, 20 is T, 1 is A, and 13 is M, and after a few messages you stop counting and start reading, the same way you stopped sounding out words as a child.
How do you write a message in numbers?
Reverse the lookup. MIDNIGHT becomes 13-9-4-14-9-7-8-20. Two habits make your message readable on the other end: keep a consistent separator between letters, and mark the word breaks clearly, with a slash, a line break, or a wider gap. A string of digits with no punctuation is legal A1Z26, but you are handing your reader a puzzle rather than a message. Sometimes that is the point.
What happens when there are no separators?
Here is the wrinkle that makes A1Z26 worth an article. Take the string 115. Split it 1-1-5 and it reads AAE. Split it 1-15 and it reads AO. Split it 11-5 and it reads KE. All three are legal, and nothing in the numbers tells you which one the writer meant.
The ambiguity has rules. Only 1 and 2 can open a two-digit number, because the alphabet stops at 26. A 7 standing alone is always G, but a 1 or a 2 might be the front half of something bigger. So the solver works like a lockpick: fix the digits that can only mean one thing, then test the splits on the rest until real words fall out. English does most of the work for you. Very few splits survive contact with the demand that the result be a word.
Puzzle setters know all this, which is why hard A1Z26 puzzles strip the separators on purpose. If you meet one, start from the digits above 2 and work outward.
Where does the A1Z26 cipher turn up?
It has no romance to its history. No lodge kept records in it and no queen died over it; it is the cipher of the schoolyard, the escape room, and the back page of the puzzle book, and there is no shame in any of that.
Its modern habitats are easy to list. Geocachers use it constantly to hide coordinates in mystery caches. Alternate reality games lean on it as a first gate, the test that welcomes you in rather than keeps you out. And a generation learned it from television: the animated series Gravity Falls ran coded messages through its end credits, and A1Z26 was part of the rotation, alongside Caesar and Atbash.
That rotation should sound familiar. Murdcrypt runs the same school: A1Z26 is the Wednesday cipher on the daily case, and it locks two of the opening files in the book. Easy to read is not the same as nothing to solve; the deduction still has to be earned.
Is the A1Z26 cipher secure?
Not even slightly, and it does not pretend to be. A1Z26 is barely a cipher at all; it is an encoding, a change of costume that any reader can reverse with a strip of paper. There is no key to recover and nothing to break. Even the no-separator trick only slows a solver down by minutes.
That is not a flaw. It is a division of labour. In a puzzle built on deduction, the cipher’s job is to make you earn the statements, not to stop you reading them. A1Z26 charges a small toll at the door and then gets out of the way, which is exactly what you want when the real puzzle is deciding who is lying.

How do you solve an A1Z26 message without separators?
Anchor the digits that can only read one way, everything from 3 to 9 standing alone, then test the splits that begin with 1 or 2 until the result makes words. The alphabet stops at 26, so only 1 and 2 can start a two-digit letter.
Is A equals 0 a real variant?
Yes, mostly in programming contexts where counting starts at zero. Puzzle A1Z26 almost always starts at 1. If a decoded message reads one letter off, shift the count and try again.
